NEMC is located on a pristine 40-acre lakeside campus in Sidney, Maine. For over 80 years, students have been enriched by our unique program, emphasizing a balance of musical gains and personal and social growth.

Opportunities for saxophonists:

• Concentrates receive two 30-minute lessons each week.

• Saxophone quartet and ensemble.

• Daily rehearsals of Band and Jazz Ensemble

SAXOPHONE FACULTY

  • A native of Western Massachusetts, Dr. Gail B. Levinsky serves as Professor of Music at Susquehanna University, where her responsibilities include teaching applied studies in saxophone, chamber music, and woodwind methods.

    As a solo and chamber artist, her presentations include performances at the North American Saxophone Alliance, World Saxophone Congress, British Saxophone Congress, US Navy Saxophone Symposium, International Alliance for Women in Music, and the Mississippi Festival of Women Composers, International Association of Women in Music, and International Double Reed Society. She has commissioned numerous compositions, including works by Marilyn Shrude, Stephanie Berg, Miho Sasaki, Erin Graham, Patrick Long, Matthew Quayle, Andrea Clearfield, Douglas McConnell, and Frank Ferko.  

    Levinsky has several recordings to her credit, including her upcoming CD recording Quiet Hearts: Music for Saxophone, which explores solo and chamber repertoire written by women and non-binary composers. She can also be heard on the recent release of Matthew Quayle’s “Woodwind Chamber Music” recording. 

    A passionate educator, Dr. Levinsky regularly presents clinics at state music education symposiums, including the MENC Eastern Region Conference, NAfME State Conferences (Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware), and the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic (‘19, ‘15, ‘07). Her publications are varied and consist of an updated edition of Rosemary Lang’s “Beginning Altissimo Method” (Ensemble Publications); Music for Saxophone & Organ (Lyceum Publications), the saxophone chapters in “Teaching Woodwinds: A Guide for Students and Teachers” (Mountain Peak Music), and several saxophone choir arrangements, including Tomás Victorria’s “O Vos Omnes”.

    Dr. Levinsky completed her graduate degrees (DM, Artist Diploma, MM) from Northwestern University, and her Bachelor of Music Education from Butler University. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and Kappa Delta Pi honor fraternities. Dr. Levinsky has served as Treasurer, Secretary, and Region 8 Director for the North American Saxophone Alliance. During the summer, Dr. Levinsky serves as Artistic Director for the internationally recognized Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute and a faculty member for the New England Music Camp in Sidney, Maine.

  • Dr. Joshua Heaney is a saxophonist and music educator based in Oklahoma City. His performances and research have taken him to Italy, Switzerland, and throughout the United States at regional and national engagements. Described as, “a sparkling and emotionally charged elixir of sound” (Morning Classics with Mary Claire Murphy), Dr. Heaney has received accolades from audiences and critics alike. He was a prizewinning performer in the Thomas M. Brumby Concerto Competition, Medici International Music Competition, Susquehanna University Concerto Competition, Georgia State University Music Honors Competition, Great Composers Competition Series, Douglas Wayland Chamber Competition, GMTA Solo Winds and Chamber Winds Competitions, ENKOR International Chamber Music Competition and a North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition finalist with Rosarium Quartet. Dr. Heaney has performed as a concerto soloist with the Oklahoma City Symphonic Band, Keene State University Concert Band, Heidelberg University Symphonic Band, Atlanta Chamber Collective, Atlanta Wind Project, Georgia State University Wind Ensemble, among others. He has also performed in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Lima Symphony, Macon Symphony, Snow Pond Music Festival Orchestra, and the Eastern Music Festival Pops.

    Beyond performing, Dr. Heaney is an impassioned music educator and regularly presents masterclasses, clinics, and performances at public schools and universities. His passion for music education extended to a residency at the Giuseppe Sarti Scuola di Musica in Faenza, Italy through the Susquehanna University GO Program, where he researched the Italian community music education system and ear-training pedagogy. He served as Orchestra Director at Rolesville High School in Raleigh, North Carolina as part of the Wake County Public School System. During his tenure at Rolesville, Dr. Heaney was awarded Wake County’s Diane Kent-Parker First-Year Teacher Award and was featured as WRAL-5’s Teacher of the Week.

    Dr. Heaney serves as Saxophone Instructor & Recruitment Coordinator at Oklahoma City University’s Wanda L. Bass School of Music. He is the founder and director of the Oklahoma Saxophone Ensemble. He previously held academic teaching appointments at Heidelberg University and Bowling Green State University. During summers, Dr. Heaney teaches saxophone at New England Music Camp as well as the internationally recognized Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute at Snow Pond Music Festival. Dr. Heaney holds degrees from Susquehanna University, Georgia State University, and Bowling Green State University (DMA). Dr. Heaney’s primary teachers include Gail B. Levinsky, Jan Baker, John Sampen, David Bixler, and Frederick L. Hemke. He maintains active affiliations with the National Association for Music Education, the North American Saxophone Alliance, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.Description text goes here
